20 where K is a coefficient which is given by gain, the size of a laser diode, internal quantum efficiency, and a confinement factor; ae,f is an internal loss; Re and R, are the reflectivities of the etched and cleaved facets, respectively. We can evaluate Re by measuring the threshold current as a function of the cavity length and by using a typical value of 0.32 for R,. The results are shown in Fig. 4. The reflectivity of the etched facet is -6%. We can also determine the values of K and a=,/; they are 10.8 mA and 41.5 cm’, respectively.
